Academic Writing: Cheating?

13 May 2008 3 Comments

Let’s make off with the introductions and jump right into it.

Yes, academic writing is cheating. True it’s one of the most lucrative areas for freelance writing. As you know, it’s one of my main sources of income. I’m not doing this post to stop you from writing term papers for other people; I sure as hell won’t be stopping any time soon.

Ever since I was a kid, from the moment I realized just how important money is (that’s around Grade 4, if I remember correctly), I knew just how much I could earn using the brains God gave me. I aced my assignments, so doing my classmates’ wouldn’t really hurt. I earned quite a handful from those term papers, and nobody ever got caught.

I have to say we didn’t have copyscape back then. Then again, I personally never did plagiarize, not even for my classmates’/clients’ term papers. It’s just a matter of pride.

Which is sort of why I never had qualms about writing papers for clients in the United States/UK/Canada or wherever. Morality didn’t quite play a role. I do feel a tinge of shame sometimes, especially when I realize how I sell God’s given talent like some cheap streetwalker.

I love writing term papers; yes, I’m a geek. I find joy in getting an outline done; research papers sort of fulfill me. It’s not that I’m a masochist; the hours used for research could easily be used for more interesting purposes, i.e. sleep. But I do actually find satisfaction in writing an excellent paper.

Let’s not distract ourselves with the illusion that these kids will use the papers we write as “reference”. Screw that. If you’ve been in this business for years (as I have), you’ll know they rarely even bother to put their own names in their. They don’t read their papers and just hand them in and that’s that. Don’t go convincing yourself that they’ll be kind enough to respect your intellectual property.

There’s a reason why I call it scholastic whoring.

You don’t get to cry foul. It’ s part of the game. Don’t delude yourself into believing that it’s all peachy and above board. It’s not.

But it earns me money, keeps me out of the red and I don’t necessarily have to kill for it, so I’m good. It’s not ethical, it’s probably illegal and it sure is immoral. So why then?

It’s terribly mercenary of me to be saying this, but really, it’s all about the money baby.

Think about that before you jump in.

XOXO,
