Just like in the real world, giving away free stuff can be a pretty good motivator to make people sit up and listen. Freebies, prizes and rewards never fail, be it online or offline. There’s something about human beings that makes us light up whenever the word “free” comes around.

That said, a contest is a very good way to get more traffic to your site. Just ask The Net Fool, host of this month’s biggest online contest. He’s giving away cash and online freebies; can you just imagine the frenzy that this is creating? More importantly, his contest isn’t asking for topnotch skills. All you need to do is subscribe to his feed, comment on his website, post about the contest (*hint*) and digg or stumbleupon it. That’s all. It doesn’t even require major brain surgery skills to join.

Note that his requirements aren’t for naught. These will actually do wonders for his blog’s popularity (if it isn’t already). In fact, I’ve never even hear of The Net Fool until someone I subscribed to blogged about the contest. Now is that online marketing at work or what?

Besides, just posting about this contest already earned him a few backlinks. I’m a rookie, so backlinks from me don’t really count for much. But I’m not the only one interested in this contest, and he’ll probably get backlinks from much bigger bloggers out there. Imagine the possibilities!
